New Omega-3 Fish Oil Under NIH Investigation: What Makes It Different From EPA and DHA?
The article highlights a clinical study sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), investigating fish oil containing very-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLC-PUFAs). Unlike conventional fish oil supplements, which primarily focus on EPA and DHA, the experimental formulation contains approximately ten times the concentration of these lesser-known fatty acids.
Researchers are investigating whether this formulation affects the Omega-3 Index, blood lipid profiles, fatty acid metabolism, and other biological measurements. Earlier animal research showed promising findings, but the potential benefits and safety of VLC-PUFA-enriched fish oil in humans remain under investigation.
The article explains what makes this fish oil different, why scientists are studying it, and what consumers should understand before considering emerging omega-3 supplement claims.

The challenge comes from within President Prabowo Subianto’s own coalition, underscoring how the political alliance that helped propel him to power in 2024 may be unravelling, analysts have said. It also follows the arrest of a prominent...
