From Mental Health Struggles to Streetwear: UK Fashion Brand on a Mission to Challenge Self-Doubt

Oct 30, 2026

Simian Saboteur promises to increase conversations around mental health and well-being through apparel.

Wickford, Essex, October 30, 2026 -- Independent UK streetwear brand Simian Saboteur is using fashion in a novel way to challenge personal feelings of self-doubt and give customers more confidence to open up about their mental health. The company, founded by Ryan and his father Darren, grew out of personal struggles with illness. Its message is straightforward: it is possible to quiet a harmful inner voice and live life to the fullest.

Ryan's life was disrupted by chronic illness at the age of 18, and medical staff found it challenging to help. During the following decade, he spent much of his time researching and experimenting to see what might help lift him out of it. Eventually, he was diagnosed with cyclothymia, which is a form of bipolar disorder. A formal diagnosis gave him more perspective on his life and his struggles, allowing him to see some potential paths through.

Ryan said the following:

“Those years were some of the most challenging of my life, but creativity was my lifeline. I used it as an opportunity to design clothes that I felt would give me more confidence and express who I was, even on the bad days. My dad supported me with the work behind the scenes, and we launched Simian Saboteur as an outlet in 2024.”

One of the biggest issues for Ryan and his father was conformity in fashion and the self-doubt it embodied. His new brand, by contrast, took an opposite approach and is designed to thoroughly “sabotage the inner critic.” The brand's tagline is literally “Built for the Outlier,” confirming its philosophy.

As for apparel, the brand sells hoodies, shorts, T-shirts, and more, including limited-edition runs with no restocks. So far, the company has pushed out more than 100 releases, with many customers enjoying its unique style, including a T-shirt with a hand-drawn chimp graphic and an oversized fit.

Ryan believes that people wearing the company's apparel will find it much easier to start conversations and express who they are. Hoodies can say things that many people would never voluntarily speak out loud, allowing them to tell a deeper story about themselves. Furthermore, Ryan hopes that Simian Saboteur, as a brand, will encourage people to talk more about the mental health issues they face.

Why the Philippines remains a hotspot for transnational drug syndicates

Transnational drug syndicates in the Philippines continue to thrive despite decades of crackdowns targeting street-level dealers, with analysts warning that regional suppliers, financiers and trafficking networks have largely eluded enforcement efforts. Former drug officials and security analysts say the country’s drug trade remains closely connected to a wider regional supply chain, with criminal groups relying on local partners, maritime routes and established distribution networks to move...

Will diversifying fuel imports be enough to fix Indonesia’s energy shortfall?

Indonesia is looking beyond Singapore for petrol supplies as it seeks to reduce its dependence on a single source, but analysts say diversifying imports will do little to address the country’s fuel production shortfall without faster refinery modernisation and investment in alternative fuels. Indonesia has long sourced petroleum products from Singapore, including RON 90 petrol, which has a minimum octane rating of 90 and is marketed domestically as Pertalite. Singapore’s geographic proximity,...

Toxic online subcultures fuelling Asia’s school attacks

Recent school attacks across Malaysia have shone a light on a troubling trend of teenagers joining an online subculture that glamorises real-life killers, according to a prominent security analyst. Three violent incidents in Malaysian schools – in Kuching on October 21, Banting in July and Bandar Utama in October last year – could be linked to the True Crime Community (TCC), said Munira Mustaffa, founder of Kuala Lumpur-based security consulting firm Chasseur Group. In the Kuching case, the...

Saviour or stopgap? Malaysia’s South Korean jets arrive to relieve ageing fighters

Malaysia received its first South Korean-made light combat jet on Friday under a nearly 4 billion ringgit (US$990 million) procurement, in what analysts describe as welcome relief for an ageing air force still years away from replacing its frontline fighters. The FA-50M Block 20 jet arrived at the air force base in Labuan, off Borneo, with a second expected in Kuantan on the peninsula’s east coast next Monday. They are the first of 18 aircraft ordered from Korea Aerospace Industries under a deal...
